OGA Update - Going Forward in 2018
In regards to writing and posting, I took some time off during the holidays to reflect and think about what I want to do with this space in 2018. Specifically, I've thought about how to make OGA a more sane and enjoyable place for me to manage and write content for - an OGA v1.5 update, so to speak, based around two conclusions.
With content, I've been focused too much on what OGA isn't instead of what it is. There certainly isn't a lack of tabletop gaming blogs, so focusing on a niche audience without constant networking and advertising means any steady readership isn't going to happen. So going forward, instead of limiting my target audience to new gamers, I'm aiming for everyone and anything. Also, I'll be focusing more on shorter posts, personal experiences, and whatever happens to be on my mind at that moment, instead of meticulously planning all topics months beforehand. I'll still do primers and how-tos, but maybe not as often as those posts tend to be a significant time investment to produce.
I need to improve photography in regards to variety and consistency, but still maintain the aesthetic I've established. The photography is a key element of OGA and the Instagram account. Everything I've shot has, by necessity, only used natural sunlight. I didn't have any lighting equipment, so I was limited in where I could shoot and still maintain the look I wanted. If you are curious, most of the black and dark wood backgrounds are the dining room table and the floor in the bedroom, respectively, as those areas have the best windows/daylight. But now, my wife gave me some excellent lights as a Christmas gift, so my photography options have increased! Huzzah! I am also considering a design change overall to the page as I'm not 100% happy with the layout, but it's not a priority at the moment.
The bottom line is that I want this blog to be fun to work on, and fun for all readers regardless of scope change.
I'll be revising the welcome/1st post to reflect the new direction going forward. All previously posted content will stay the same. Thanks so much for reading, and I hope you enjoy what's coming next.
